Common questions
- Where does the video get uploaded?
- Nowhere. Reading the video and assembling the GIF both finish inside your browser. No network request happens at all, so private footage is safe here.
- What do I change to make the file smaller?
- Width has the biggest effect, then frames per second, then the number of colours. Footage where almost nothing moves is already much smaller, because unchanged areas are skipped automatically.
- The colours look blotchy.
- A GIF can hold at most 256 colours. Raise the colour count, or turn on dithering — it scatters the remaining error into neighbouring pixels so the banding is less visible.
- Why does it take a while to build?
- Every frame has to be pulled out of the video, then reduced in colour and compressed. The work grows with frames per second times the length of the section. Pick a short section and it finishes quickly.
- Which videos can I put in?
- Anything your browser can play. mp4, webm and mov generally open.
