Normalize the volume of a recording that jumps around. Compare before and after by waveform and by number; the file never leaves your browser.
How to use it
- Add an audio or video file
- Pick how even it should be, and the target level
- Hit Normalize
- Compare before and after by waveform and by ear
- Download it as WAV
Common questions
- Why not just turn the volume up?
- That does not work — the loud parts clip first and the sound breaks. So the loud parts are pushed down to narrow the range (evening out) and only then is everything raised (boosting). The other order distorts.
- What is the “unevenness” number?
- The gap between the loudest peak and the perceived loudness. A smaller number means the gap between the parts you could not hear and the parts that hurt has narrowed — it measures how even the loudness became.
- Is stronger evening out better?
- Speech usually takes strong settings well, but on music it also lifts breath and background noise until everything feels stuffy. Judge it with the waveform and your ears.
- Which formats can I save as?
- MP3 or WAV. The preview always plays lossless; the format is chosen when you download.
- Why is the target level not 0?
- Sitting exactly at 0 overflows on some playback devices and during conversion, which adds noise. Leaving a little headroom is safer.
