Which standard should I pick?

Code128 for anything mixing letters and digits, such as internal stock or sorting books. Retail product barcodes are EAN-13, which takes 13 digits and nothing else.

What is the last digit of an EAN-13?

The check digit. It is computed from the first 12, and entering only 12 fills it in for you. Enter 13 with a mismatching last digit and it tells you the right one.

I printed it and the scanner will not read it.

Do not trim the margins at the sides. A barcode finds its start from the white space to the left and right — this is the most common reason a home-made barcode fails. Keeping the bars at 2px or wider helps too.

Can it hold non-Latin text?

It cannot. A barcode holds Latin letters, digits and symbols only. When you need other scripts, use a QR code.

Where does the value get uploaded?
