Turns a photo or drawing into ASCII art. Adjust width in characters, character set, brightness, contrast and inversion, then save as text or PNG. Images stay inside your browser.

How to use it

  1. Drop in an image (pasting or choosing a file works too)
  2. Set how many characters across — more means finer detail
  3. Pick a character set (detailed · blocks · simple · braille)
  4. Invert the brightness if it goes on a dark background
  5. Copy the text, or save it as PNG

Common questions

Does the image get uploaded to a server?
No. It is read and processed on a browser canvas, and no data leaves over the network.
The result looks stretched vertically.
Monospace characters are taller than they are wide. That ratio is corrected automatically, but wide line spacing where you paste it can stretch it again. Keep the line height near 1.0.
Which images work best?
Images with strong contrast and a simple background. For people, cropping tightly to the face reads much better.
Is the colour saved?
“Add colour” is for the on-screen preview only. Copying the text or saving the PNG gives you a single colour.
