Time capsule letter

Nobody opens it before the day · no server holding it · changing the clock does not help

A time capsule letter — write one nobody can open before the day you set. No server holds it: the locked letter itself is the address, and the key only comes together from what a public randomness beacon publishes on that day.

How to use it

  1. Write the letter
  2. Pick when it opens (tomorrow · a month · a year · ten years)
  3. Hit Lock it, then keep or send the link you get
  4. Open that link on the day and the letter is there

Common questions

How is this different from other date-locked services?
Most keep the letter on a server and send it on the day. That means an administrator can read it early, and if the service shuts down the letter goes with it. Here the locked letter *is* the address, so there is nothing being held anywhere.
Can I open it by changing my computer’s clock?
No, because the key is not on your computer. A public randomness beacon only publishes that round’s value once the time arrives, and without that value the key cannot be assembled.
What if I lose the address?
The letter goes with it. No copy is kept on our side. For anything important, write the address down in more than one place.
What does it depend on?
That public randomness beacon has to keep running for it to open. In exchange, no company can read the letter early.
