Common questions
- What is the difference between 401 and 403?
- 401 means “I do not know who you are” — you need to sign in. 403 means “I know who you are, and you are not allowed”.
- Should I use 301 or 302?
- Use 301 when the address has moved permanently; search engines carry the ranking over to the new one. For something temporary, use 302 or 307.
- What is the difference between 404 and 410?
- 404 means “not here right now”, 410 means “gone for good”. Returning 410 gets it dropped from the index faster.
