Common questions

Why are the tables gathered in one place?
All four do the same job — finding a character that is not on the keyboard and copying it. Kept apart, you first have to work out which table it lives in. The individual addresses still work.
The symbol I copied looks broken elsewhere.
That device or program has no font for the character. The copied value itself is fine.
When do I need HTML entities?
When a web document has to display a character that markup would otherwise eat, such as an angle bracket or an ampersand.
